Sensitivity

When we calculate a finite element response, or a failure probability, it useful to know how sensitive the result is to variation in the input. That can give us useful insights, and it can tell us how much we should trust the result. Sensitivity analysis is the subject of this page, but I do not cover much of this in my courses. I talk about reliability sensitivity and important measures in CIVL 518, and I briefly mention response sensitivities there, because they are needed to compute the reliability of a structure by FORM. Response sensitivities are also required in the other gradient-based optimization algorithms posted on the Reliability page.
